Program Description
This program was established with the cooperation of the
Solano County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee and offers courses for
both pre-service and in-service students. All instructors have
experience in law enforcement, and courses are scheduled day or evening to
accommodate full-time and part-time students seeking to acquire or upgrade
skills in the field.
Opportunities
Your education and training will help make you eligible
to fill the large and continuing demand for skilled and
professionally-oriented law enforcement officers in local, state and
federal agencies, and in private business. Experienced officers may
be promoted to full positions as supervisors, investigators and
administrators.
Your New Skills
You will survey law enforcement and
criminal justice from historical and contemporary perspectives and review
career opportunities. You will examine the structure of criminal law
through a broad range of legal concepts and legal research and by
inspecting the most frequently used sections of criminal codes. You will
learn types of evidence used in criminal cases and rules concerning
admissibility of evidence in court. You will be shown the fundamentals of
investigation--collection, identification, and preservation of evidence,
use of scientific aids, techniques of interviewing witnesses and
techniques for the investigation of specific crimes. You will learn the
theory of techniques of beat patrol, accident investigation and traffic
law enforcement. You will learn the philosophy of juvenile treatment as
well as laws and procedures used in police work with juveniles. You will
develop an understanding of the philosophy of the use of restrained police
control methods, both in the martial arts and in the moral, legal and
practical use of firearms.
